The Kennedy Center claimed that Donald Trump‘s name has been removed from the building. This happened after a US district court judge ruled that the name was added illegally and should be removed. On Saturday, it was reported that workers were called in to cover the structure with tarpaulin as they began removing the letters.
Kennedy Center removed Donald Trump’s name
The Kennedy Center will no longer bear the name of Donald Trump. It has reportedly been removed from the structure, the day after its original deadline. It was earlier renamed by the board’s unanimous vote to recognize the president’s efforts in reshaping Washington, DC. This move follows US District Judge Christopher Cooper’s ruling. In his opinion piece, he stated that the center received its name from Congress. So only Congress has the right to change it.
Originally, the name removal process was given a Friday deadline, but it was delayed due to thunderstorms. However, the judge gave additional time to complete the work. Therefore, on Saturday, workers were called in to remove the name from the structure as people gathered to watch. The judge also temporarily refused to allow the center to be closed for renovations for two years upon Trump’s request (via The Guardian).
A few months ago, Trump took to Truth Social to announce his plans to revamp the Kennedy Center. He stated that the historic venue will be closing down for “construction, revitalization, and complete rebuilding” for two years, starting July 4, which marks the 250th anniversary.
“Based on these findings, and totally subject to Board approval, I have determined that the fastest way to bring The Trump Kennedy Center to the highest level of Success, Beauty, and Grandeur, is to cease Entertainment Operations for an approximately two year period of time, with a scheduled Grand Reopening that will rival and surpass anything that has taken place with respect to such a Facility before,” he wrote.
Earlier, Trump reacted to the judge’s ruling, stating that he would direct the Commerce Department to transfer the center to Congress.
