Marco Rubio compared the planned White House UFC event to the moon landing. His remarks about Donald Trump’s birthday celebration quickly drew attention online. The secretary of state said the event reflected America’s history of embracing bold ideas, but critics were unconvinced. His comments sparked a wave of reactions on social media.
Marco Rubio likens Donald Trump’s birthday UFC event to moon landing
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio backed the idea of staging a UFC event at the White House to mark Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. And while defending the plan, he reached for a comparison that definitely raised some eyebrows.
Rubio brought up the Apollo era, saying that when President Kennedy promised to put a man on the moon and bring astronauts home safely, many people doubted it could be done. His point was that Americans have a history of pulling off things that once seemed like long shots. “We are a nation founded on doing what no one else dared to do, and no one else aspired to do,” Rubio said.
Rubio then connected that spirit to the Ultimate Fighting Championship. “And at some level, that’s what this whole company, what UFC has been,” he said. Rubio’s remarks came just before he signed an agreement aimed at expanding the use of what he called “cage fights for diplomacy.”
The comparison quickly spread online and prompted plenty of criticism. Several users mocked the idea of placing a combat sports event alongside one of humanity’s greatest scientific accomplishments. One commenter sarcastically wrote that “whenever I think of moon landings, I think UFC.”
Others contrasted President John F. Kennedy’s lunar ambitions with Donald Trump’s plans for a White House fight card. Some questioned whether a sporting event involving punches and kicks belonged in the same conversation as the 1969 moon landing. Another user joked that America had gone from “man on the moon” to “bloodsport.”
