Joe Biden’s wife, Jill Biden, recalled a cold conversation with Melania Trump during the ride in the limousine. It happened when the duo was taken to the U.S. Capitol for the presidential inauguration ceremony. She claimed in her new memoir that the current First Lady kept steering the conversation around the weather and offered short replies during their icebreaker.
Jill Biden talks about Melania Trump encounter
Jill Biden recently released her memoir, A View from the East Wing, which includes a dedicated chapter detailing a “frosty” interaction between Melania Trump and her. It recalled the moments before Joe Biden and Jill handed over their presidential and first lady responsibilities to Donald Trump and Melania in 2025, marking their second time in the administration.
She revealed that John Bessler, the husband of Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, accompanied them on the ride, tasked with breaking the ice between the two ladies. Sharing why their interaction wasn’t the same kind of cold as the former and current presidents, Jill added, “The presidents’ car was likely frosty too, but at least they’d spent considerable time in each other’s company. This would be one of the few interactions Melania and I had ever had.”
Jill believed that the frosty behavior likely stemmed from Melania placing blame on her husband, Joe, for making the FBI investigate her private spaces in Mar-a-Lago. While Jill expressed understanding for Melania’s situation, as she had faced a similar one before, she revealed that Bessler tried his best to find a way to bridge the gap between them to start a conversation.
Bessler asked Melania where Barron goes to school, but received only a short reply: “NYU.” Jill revealed that Melania didn’t speak about anything else, instead steering the conversation towards the weather. Therefore, she also kept the interaction simple, adding to her weather focus by talking about the brave military dogs outside (via The Independent).
