Dwayne Johnson & Michael Bay’s Overlooked Comedy To Stream on Peacock

Peacock is updating its library and is set to acquire a 2013 black comedy directed by Michael Bay, featuring Dwayne Johnson. The film is loosely based on a true story, following a group of bodybuilders who wreaked havoc in ‘90s Miami.

Pain & Gain arrives on Peacock next month

Pain & Gain will become available to stream on Peacock from Monday, June 1, 2026, per the streamer’s schedule.

The film is loosely based on Pete Collins’s 1999 three-part Miami New Times article of the same name. The screenwriter duo Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely wrote the film’s screenplay. They have famously worked on popular titles such as the Narnia trilogy, the Captain America trilogy, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and even the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

Pain & Gain centers on Daniel Lugo, an ex-convict and bodybuilder working as a manager at Sun Gym. Obsessed with becoming rich, Lugo works with fellow bodybuilder Adrian Doorbal to plan and kidnap Victor Kershaw, his wealthy client. Soon after, they enlist Paul Doyle, another ex-con, to help carry out their plans.

The three eventually kidnap Kershaw and force him to transfer his assets to Lugo. After getting what they wanted, the trio attempts to kill him by staging his death. However, Kershaw surprisingly survives, but fails to convince the police of all the events. He then seeks revenge on the trio, leading to bizarre incidents.

Pain & Gain’s cast features Mark Wahlberg as Daniel Lugo, Dwayne Johnson as Paul, Anthony Mackie as Adrian, Tony Shalhoub as Victor Kershaw, Rebel Wilson as Robin, and Ed Harris as Detective Ed Du Bois, among others.

Paramount Pictures served as the film’s producer and distributor as part of its two-part deal with the director, with the other film being 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction (via PR Newswire). Pain & Gain later debuted in theaters on April 26, 2013, and received a mixed reception.

It currently has a 49% critics’ approval rating and a 47% user rating on Rotten Tomatoes. On IMDb, it has a user score of 6.4 out of 10 based on 240K votes. Meanwhile, at the box office, it made about $87.3 million globally on a $26 million budget.
