Actor Mads Mikkelsen has set a condition for reviving his role as Hannibal Lecter. The star insists any return must be in a specific format.
While promoting The Last Viking, the Danish actor addressed the persistent speculation surrounding a potential Season 4 of Bryan Fuller’s critically acclaimed psychological thriller. More than a decade has passed since NBC cancelled the series, yet discussions of a revival never fully subsided. Mikkelsen’s latest comments clarify what it would take to bring him back.
Mads Mikkelsen talks Hannibal return
Mikkelsen was direct about his preference. He believes Fuller’s interpretation of the character belongs on the small screen, where the writing has room to breathe properly. “I think that the Hannibal that he created is a TV animal,” he told ScreenRant. “He can persuade me to make a film, sure, but it’s only an hour and a half, and I think that his way of writing and his way of developing characters and stories are much more suitable for 13 or 14 episodes,” Mikkelsen added.
The actor’s stance makes practical sense. Fuller’s storytelling on Hannibal was methodical, layering psychological tension across multiple hours. Squeezing that approach into a feature film would leave little room for the atmosphere that defined the series.
Still, willingness alone cannot resurrect Hannibal as Mads Mikkelsen pointed to a more stubborn obstacle, aka the passage of time. A decade has slipped by since the third season ended. “I don’t think there’s anyone who wouldn’t want to go back and do it, but I also think that time is tick-tocking away,” he said. “We stay as young as we can, but all of a sudden, we’re just too old, right? So, it’s going to [have to] be one of these years soon, and I think everybody would enjoy it.”
The rest of the cast also seems interested. Hugh Dancy, who played Will Graham, has reportedly expressed his own desire to continue the story. However, the rights to Harris’ characters are scattered across different holders, a situation Fuller described as “messy” in March 2026. He noted that author Thomas Harris is attempting to consolidate them.
