Donnie Darko sequel is finally happening 25 years later. But the way it’s happening is nothing fans expected. The follow-up to the 2001 sci-fi thriller will continue the story while expanding the strange mythology surrounding the original film.
According to Variety, Richard Kelly, who directed and wrote the original film, will release an 800-page book sequel titled The Philosophy of Time Travel. The novel will pick up in 1988, shortly after the events of the first film, which ended with Donnie’s death.
Kelly has spent the past decade writing the book, though he spent the last 20 years trying to figure out how to make a proper sequel work. According to Kelly, this book is a pivotal step in his larger plan to expand the story into animated and live-action movies.
“I think what I realized as the story got bigger and bigger and bigger is that I needed to go back in time and away from the sequel,” Kelly told Variety. “I needed to tell the story of what happens in the 14 months after Donnie’s death.”

The Philosophy of Time Travel will arrive in Q4 from Range Literary Publishing. The timeline falls alongside the film’s 25th anniversary on October 26, 2026. Pre-orders are already live at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. An exact release date will be announced in the coming days.
Kelly’s novel tells the story through a found-documents format. Donnie’s mother, Rose, and father, Eddie, will document what happens after their son’s death. They will also pursue separate investigations into what happened and why. The 51-year-old writer says readers will also see different versions of familiar characters, including some who seemed villainous in the original film.
The director has not yet approached the original cast about returning for potential film sequels. He wants the novel to serve as his pitch and give the actors a chance to see how their characters have evolved.
The original movie starred Jake Gyllenhaal as Donnie, alongside Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Patrick Swayze, and Seth Rogen. Now, Kelly is using this book as the first step toward bringing his long-planned sequel to life.
