Cary Elwes recalls Tom Cruise’s surprising words before crash on Days of Thunder set
Cary Elwes recalled Tom Cruise’s words before the car crash while filming Days of Thunder in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “Tom put a car in the wall, actually, on his first day of driving, you know, and these things are not cheap,” he said. The veteran actor continued, “And he was so funny on film. His last words before crashing were, ‘Hello, wall.'” Elwes added how he “loves” the Mission: Impossible star.
“He’s a terrific guy. He really is so fun to work with, so, so professional and so supportive of everybody,” he shared. The 63-year-old said that he learnt to drive a NASCAR for the action sports drama. He went on to shower praises on director Tony Scott, calling him “a lovely, awesome man.”
Elwes explained how Scott came to him on the first day and said, “Okay, here’s what you need to do when you get up to speed. I want you to take the wheel with your knees, and then I want you to flip on each of the cameras, grab the wheel again, and then when they’re switched on, take the wheel with your knees again, and then clap each camera.”
As such, Elwes gave his reaction to the director’s statement. “And I said, ‘You’re joking, right?’ He goes, ‘No, no, no, that’s what we’re gonna do.’ And I thought, ‘This is nuts,'” he stated. At last, Elwes said, “Of course, I did it.”
Days of Thunder was released on June 27, 1990. The film opened to mixed reviews but became succesful at the box office. It grossed $157.9 million worldwide against a budget of $60 million.
