Paul McCartney performed with Stephen Colbert as a special guest for The Late Show finale. The duo sang The Beatles’ classic “Hello Goodbye” together, accompanied by Elvis Costello and Jon Batiste. Furthermore, Colbert asked McCartney to share stories about his first visit to the Ed Sullivan Theater many moons ago. The 83-year-old legendary musician said, “We’d never been to America; we come here and people said this is the biggest show. It was fantastic… You had to go a few floors down to get makeup… We went down there and the girls put makeup on us and it was, like, bright orange.”
Colbert asked McCartney whether The Beatles were nervous about coming to America. To which the musician replied, “We were a little bit nervous, but we’re young kids and we’re sort of full of ourselves. It was very exciting. The land of the free; the greatest democracy. That was what it was, and still is, hopefully.” For those unversed, The Beatles performed at the Ed Sullivan Theater on February 9, 1964.
Finally, McCartney was tasked with the ceremonial honor of turning out the lights in the Ed Sullivan Theater. Fans were ecstatic to watch McCartney grace the final episode of The Late Show. One fan commented, “Paul, the biggest star of all the stars. A worthy guest on the final episode,” followed by multiple emojis.
A second fan wrote, “Paul was the absolute perfect final guest. And he sang the show off with joy – Hello, Goodbye. Awesome to see Jon Batiste also.” A third fan chimed in, “The Late Show, classy ending by having Paul McCartney as your last guest. He sounded amazing with ‘Hello Goodbye’ and so appropriate! I’ll miss you.”
