Jimmy Kimmel recently revealed that he offered a big hosting opportunity to Stephen Colbert while organizing his summer lineup. However, Colbert seemingly turned down his offer. This comes a few months after The Late Show With Stephen Colbert was canceled for “a purely financial decision,” as cited by CBS.

On June 18’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! episode, Kimmel announced that he’s voluntarily taking a 2-month hiatus. He announced that other guest hosts will fill his absence. These hosts included Tiffany Haddish, Anthony Anderson, Colman Domingo, and more. However, in a recent interview with Variety, Kimmel disclosed that he also asked Colbert to guest-host on his talk show, following The Late Show’s cancellation.
Kimmel said, “Of course, I asked him, and I think it feels premature. But I told him, ‘anytime you want to host, it doesn’t matter if it’s the summer, I’ll gladly step aside.” However, he revealed that Colbert refused to take the opportunity.
Additionally, Kimmel also celebrated a milestone in this month’s viewership, which averaged 3.15 million viewers. He said, “The ratings are very strong, which we are very grateful to CBS for their wisdom. We were doing pretty well before that, but that really helped.” Wittily addressing the viewer boost, he added, “I’ve always thought of our show as an orphanage.”
While Kimmel is currently on a break from his chat show, he did appear on July 22 for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. He revealed that he finds doing this show a lot easier, comparing it to simply swinging the bat as the ball is thrown. “You don’t have to sit there and figure out what you’re going to do, what you’re going to say. There’s no writing involved, really. It’s nice to just be there, relying on your wits. People can watch as a community; you can watch it with your kids,” he continued.
