A 2016 animated musical comedy featuring the voice of Justin Timberlake is set to leave Netflix next month. The Oscar-nominated film is produced by DreamWorks, the studio behind hit franchises like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon.
Trolls leaves Netflix in June
Trolls will exit Netflix’s content library on Monday, June 1, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix).
The film is based on a toy line of the same name created by a Danish woodcarver, Thomas Dam, in the late 1950s. Currently, DreamWorks Animation holds the global rights to the Trolls franchise, except in Scandinavia, where the Dam Family holds the rights.
The film tells the story of the ever-happy titular creatures. Their enemies, the Bergens, believe that eating Trolls is the only way to become happy. After years of suffering, the Trolls finally managed to escape and live safely in hiding.
However, their peaceful life comes to a halt when Princess Poppy celebrates their 20th anniversary of escaping. Their celebration catches the attention of Chef, an exiled Bergen. He kidnaps several Trolls, including Poppy’s friends. Determined to save them, Poppy teams up with Branch on a dangerous journey.
Walt Dohrn and Mike Mitchell directed the film, with a script by Erica Rivinoja and a screenplay by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger. The voice cast of Troll includes Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Zooey Deschanel, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Gwen Stefani, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, among others.
20th Century Fox served as the Troll’s distributor, premiering it at the 2016 BFI London Film Festival. It later debuted in the United States on November 4, 2016. The film received a positive reception from both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently holds a critics’ score of 76% and a user score of 67%.
Troll also performed well at the box office. It earned $347 million at the global box office against a $125 million budget. The following year, it received an Oscar nomination for its original song, “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” performed by Timberlake. The song currently has over 1.9 billion views on YouTube.
Furthermore, the film received follow-ups in the form of two sequels, two TV specials, and two animated series.
