Ava DuVernay’s New Sequel to Oscar-Nominated Movie Sets Netflix Release Date

Netflix has announced the release date for Ava DuVernay’s sequel to an Oscar-nominated film. It is a documentary film that was made as a follow-up to the American filmmaker’s acclaimed 2016 documentary film.

According to Tudum by Netflix, 14th will premiere as the Closing Night selection at the New York Film Festival on October 9, 2026. Following its festival debut, the documentary will open in select theaters across the U.S. and UK on November 27, 2026, before streaming globally on Netflix on December 4, 2026.

DuVernay’s 2016 film 13th won two Emmy awards at the 69th Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Adding to that, the film was also nominated for an Academy Award. 14th, as a follow-up film to 13th, delves into the 14th Amendment of the Constitution of the USA.

The film looks at the 150-year history of the amendment and how it has shaped the idea of citizenship in the country. Furthermore, the documentary also discusses recent court cases and legal battles centering on the same issue.

The synopsis of 14th reads, “Written in the wreckage of the Civil War, the 14th Amendment was meant to close the door on the hierarchy of human worth. Instead, it has become a permanent argument. Ava DuVernay’s 14th pulls this constitutional fight out of the footnotes and into the present, chronicling the vicious battle over the amendment that has raged for over 150 years. Threading deep archival scholarship with piercing headlines of today, 14th brings together legal minds, politicians, historians, and cultural voices in direct conversation with a question America still hasn’t settled: Who gets to belong?”

What else is Ava DuVernay known for besides 13th and 14th?

The 53-year-old filmmaker began her journey with an internship with CBS News. In 2011, she directed her first feature film, I Will Follow, starring Salli Richardson-Whitfield. Prior to that, she created a documentary on the 1990s Los Angeles good life hip-hop movement, This Is the Life, back in 2008, and a short film in 2006, Saturday Night Life.

DuVernay is renowned for her notable documentaries and feature films. The list of her popular works includes Selma (2014), 13th (2016), Middle of Nowhere (2012), A Wrinkle in Time (2018), and Origin (2023). Her career achievements include two Primetime Emmy Awards, a BAFTA Film Award, and an Oscar nomination.

Reflecting on her upcoming film, the director said via Tudum by Netflix, “If 13th asked who gets caged, then 14th asks who gets counted. This is not a film about the past tense of freedom. I’m not interested in asking you to look back. The film asks what kind of country is being written beneath our feet now … while we’re busy believing the stories we’ve all been told.”
