John Travolta received one of the biggest surprises of his career at the Cannes Film Festival. The Hollywood icon recently opened up about his moment of receiving the honorary Palme d’Or. He also revealed that he had absolutely no idea the moment was coming. During an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”, Travolta admitted the entire thing had been kept under wraps, leaving him emotional and completely caught off guard.

Speaking with Jimmy Fallon, Travolta shared that the recognition was “a complete secret,” explaining that even people closest to him had no clue. “No one on my team knew. No one on the Apple team knew. No one did,” he said while recalling the moment.
According to Travolta, Cannes director Thierry Frémaux had quietly been planning the surprise for months after seeing “Propeller One-Way Night Coach.” The film was Travolta’s directorial debut and an Apple-backed project based on his 1997 children’s book. The actor explained that Frémaux accepted the film unusually early, nearly five months before the festival. In fact, the latter had hinted at making it “a very special night.”
Still, Travolta believed the special treatment was in connection with the film screening. “I was happy just to be there. I didn’t expect this at all,” he said.
The surprise honor came ahead of the world premiere of “Propeller One-Way Night Coach”, which Travolta has described as the “most personal film” of his career. At Cannes, he became emotional while accepting the award and told the audience, “This is beyond the Oscar,” adding in French, “This is the last thing I expected.”
The actor has made memorable appearances in “Pulp Fiction”, “Grease”, and “Saturday Night Fever.” During the interaction, he reflected on his family’s influence. Travolta said the deeply personal project represents his roots and childhood dreams. For Travolta, the recognition was more than an award. It became a moment he never saw coming.
