Guy Ritchie has addressed the diverging release strategies for In the Grey and Fountain of Youth. One is now in cinemas, and the other landed exclusively on streaming.
Guy Ritchie explains why Fountain of Youth got a streaming release
Fountain of Youth debuted on Apple TV+ last year, on May 23, and became a sustained hit for the platform. The action-adventure film, inspired by Indiana Jones, features John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, who play estranged siblings. The duo goes on a global hunt for the mythical fountain. It also had a regular spot in Apple’s US top 10 chart for several days.
Yet the film never saw a cinema release. In an interview with ScreenRant during promotion for In the Grey, Ritchie was asked whether he tried to make sure this one went for a theatrical release after Fountain of Youth was released on streaming. He responded, “I think the market’s changed, and the business has changed.” Further adding, he stated, “The truth is, I don’t really have a perspective one way or the other, aside from the fact that if you make films for the theater, there is an advantage to going to the theater.”
Ritchie elaborated the distinction between the two formats. “There’s a difference between a 4-inch screen and a 40-foot screen, and there’s also a difference between being a participant in the theatrical experience [and watching alone],” he said. “It’s a different thing when 500 people react to a film than you as an individual.”
But he did not dismiss streaming. “I’d say there are merits to both of those experiences, but principally, cinema is about going to the cinema. I do like the fact that you can make films for a smaller format, though, and I feel as though there’s room for both of those expressions,” Ritchie concluded.
With decades of cinema hits and multiple streaming series, it seems Guy Ritchie treats the divide not as a conflict but as a practical choice based on the story being told.
