Poor Things to stream on Netflix next month
Poor Things will begin streaming on Netflix from Sunday, June 7, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix).
The film is based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel of the same name. Yorgos Lanthimos helmed the adaptation with a screenplay from Tony McNamara. This was the second time the two collaborated, having previously worked on The Favourite in 2018.
Lanthimos reportedly had been wanting to adapt the book for a long time. He traveled to Scotland in the early 2010s to meet Gray and acquire the book’s rights (via BBC). In a 2023 Vogue interview, he said that the author was “a very lovely man,” but died just a few years before the film materialized.
Set in a retro-futuristic Victorian London, Poor Things follows Bella Baxter, a young woman resurrected by scientist Godwin Baxter. He replaces Bella’s brain with her unborn child’s, resulting in an infant’s mind in an adult body. Under Godwin’s care, Bella evolves rapidly. After running away with debauched lawyer Duncan Wedderburn, she begins exploring her sexual freedom and philosophy.
The film’s cast features Emma Stone as Bella Baxter, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Godwin, Mark Ruffalo as Duncan, Ramy Youssef as Max, Margaret Qualley as Felicity, and Kathryn Hunter as Madame Swiney, among others.
Poor Things debuted in cinemas on January 12, 2024, and opened to raving reviews from both critics and audiences alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently holds a Tomatometer score of 92% and a Popcornmeter of 80%. Meanwhile, on Metacritic, it has a weighted-average critics’ score of 88 and a user score of 6.9.
At the box office, the film ended its theatrical run with a global haul of $117.6 million against a $35 million budget. Furthermore, Poor Things received 11 Oscar nominations at the 2024 awards. It won four, including one for Emma Stone.
