Hot Summer Nights hits Netflix’s platform on Monday, June 1, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix).
First-time filmmaker Elijah Bynum wrote and directed the film. He based it on his 2013 Black List spec script. The film stars Timothée Chalamet as Daniel, Maika Monroe as McKayla, Alex Roe as Hunter, Maia Mitchell as Amy, and William Fichtner as Shep, among others.
Hot Summer Nights takes place in 1991, with Shane Epstein Petrullo serving as the narrator. The story centers on Daniel, a teenager who is sent to Cape Cod to live with his aunt after his father’s death. There, he befriends Hunter and eventually becomes involved in a lucrative drug-selling business. Meanwhile, he secretly dates Hunter’s sister, McKayla. Things spiral out of control when Daniel plans to sell drugs without Dex, their boss, leading to fatal consequences.
A24 acquired the rights to release it in theaters. Hot Summer Nights eventually opened in theaters with a limited release on July 27, 2018. Seemingly due to its limited release, the film made $246,133 at the box office (via Box Office Mojo).
Although several viewers praised the film for its style, it ultimately received mediocre ratings. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a Tomatometer score of 46% and a Popcornmeter score of 59%. Meanwhile, on IMDb, the score stands at 6.4 based on over 27,000 users’ votes.
In a recent Happy Sad Confused podcast episode, Monroe recalled having skepticism about the Dune actor before their chemistry read. She said she was cast in the role first and had read the script with four different actors earlier. When Chalamet walked in for the read, she recalled him being “tiny, little, skinny kid.” Monroe was not sure how it would work out between the two of them. However, “he blew it out of the water.”
“I think he was always just destined for this. I think he was made for this job and this career, for sure,” the actress added.
