SNL Star Seemingly Slams Kevin Hart’s Roast for Using White Writers

Social media lit up this week over a cryptic but pointed message seemingly aimed at a high-profile roast.

SNL star Michael Che posted on Instagram, appearing to call out Kevin Hart’s recent roast for its use of white writers. The implication landed hard and spread fast across entertainment sites, catching the attention of fans and industry watchers alike.

SNL alum Michael Che reportedly calls out Kevin Hart’s roast over his writing team

Saturday Night Live alum Michael Che has reportedly called out Kevin Hart’s recent comedy roast, taking issue with the composition of Hart’s writing team.

In a cheeky Instagram post, Michael Che seemed to mock the makeup of the writers’ room behind The Roast of Kevin Hart, the Netflix special that aired live Sunday. Che’s post opened with a mock conversation between two fictional people shaping key creative choices for the roast.

“Let’s do a roast celebrating the career of the most successful black comic in the last 10 years. I love that! Who should we get to write it?” the first slide read.

The second slide in Che’s carousel featured an image of writers Nick Mullen, J.P. McDade, Mike Lawrence, Dan St. Germain, and Zac Amico from the event, noting that all five writers are white. The post ended with a single line on the final slide: “cmonnnnnnnn..thats not funny?”

Entertainment Weekly has contacted representatives for Hart, Netflix, Mullen, Lawrence, St. Germain, and Amico for comment.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, McDade reposted Che’s Instagram post to his own Stories. He only included the middle slide, the group photo of himself and his colleagues, leaving out Che’s commentary. “Don’t swipe,” he wrote over the image.

While Che’s post spotlighted five writers, The Roast of Kevin Hart actually credited 17 writers total. The full list includes several Black writers, including Harry Ratchford, Chris Spencer, and Joey Wells.

Zac Amico had previously explained that Shane Gillis, who hosted the roast, was the one who brought him and the other writers pictured in Che’s post onto the project.
