Today show host Savannah Guthrie has joined forces with Jimmy Fallon for a brand new NBC show. The series will be the TV adaptation of a popular web game.

Guthrie will host an NBC series based on Wordle, which is published daily on The New York Times. Both the NYT and Fallon are producing the series. Guthrie and Fallon revealed the news during the latter’s recent appearance on the Today show.

“This is very exciting. I have a big announcement to make,” Fallon said. “We’ve been developing Wordle as a game show for the past two-and-a-half years with The New York Times, and it’s official — we are making Wordle Game Show with our host, Savannah Guthrie!”

Guthrie revealed that she and Fallon had been keeping the secret “for a long time now.” Additionally, Fallon revealed why he and his collaborators picked Guthrie as the host. “I’m so happy it’s you,” Fallon told the broadcast journalist. “We were looking, we’re like, ‘Who’s the perfect host of this?’ We need to have someone that looks like they play Wordle, someone that knows how to run a show and host it.”

The Tonight Show host also disclosed that they have filmed a pilot episode for the series. “And you are amazing, by the way,” he praised Guthrie.

Notably, Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle created Wordle, which publicly came out in 2021. The New York Times acquired the game in early 2022. Since then, it has become widely popular.

The above announcement comes amid the ongoing search for Guthrie’s missing mother, Nancy. Guthrie thanked the team behind the Wordle show for how understanding they had been of her circumstances, sharing that they told her they would wait for her. “Hollywood is a really tough business, and I didn’t expect that, and I just want to say thank you, it means so much to me,” she added.

The Wordle is currently casting participants. The series will premiere on NBC in 2027 (via Variety).
