Dutton Ranch Time Jump Confirms When Yellowstone Sequel Takes Place

Dutton Ranch‘s timeline has officially been confirmed. New information about the upcoming Yellowstone sequel confirms that the story will take place after a significant time jump following the ending of the original series. The update provides a clearer picture of where Beth and Rip’s story begins as the franchise expands.

Dutton Ranch will have a time jump after Yellowstone ending

New information about Dutton Ranch has revealed that the upcoming sequel to Yellowstone will not begin immediately after the events of the original series finale.

According to cast members Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, the new series takes place roughly one year after the conclusion of Yellowstone, allowing the story to explore a new phase in the lives of Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. Hauser also shared his thoughts on Beth and Rip’s relationship. He told PEOPLE, “The Beth-Rip relationship, it’s so much different than any other relationship I’ve ever had on camera. It’s hot, it’s cold, it’s beautiful.”

The sequel follows Beth and Rip after they leave Montana in the aftermath of John Dutton’s death. Joined by their adopted son Carter, portrayed by Finn Little, the family relocates to Rio Paloma, Texas, where they attempt to establish a new life on their own ranch. However, the move does not bring stability for long. As Beth and Rip begin building a future outside the Dutton ranch, the arrival of new ranchers creates fresh conflict and threatens the legacy they are trying to create in Texas.

The sequel continues directly from the fallout of Yellowstone Season 5, which ended with the death of John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, following an attack connected to Sarah Atwood and Jamie Dutton. The recently released trailer for the series also references John’s absence.

In one emotional moment, Beth looks at a memorial displaying her father’s photograph and cowboy hat before quietly saying, “I miss him.” Rip responds, “We brought the best part of your father with us.”

Dutton Ranch premieres on Paramount+ on May 15, 2026.
