1 Big Name Still in Contention for Storm in Marvel’s X-Men Reboot – Report

Marvel Studios has yet to announce any official casting for its upcoming X-Men reboot, but a rumor continues to circulate about one major role. Cynthia Erivo, the actor and singer known for her acclaimed role as Elphaba in Wicked, is reportedly still being considered to play Storm.

Cynthia Erivo still rumored for Storm’s role in X-Men

The initial report linking Erivo to the X-Men reboot surfaced last year but got limited attention. It gained more weight when Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic said he had heard there was “actual interest” in casting her as the weather-controlling mutant Ororo Munroe.

Subsequent reports that Marvel intended to assemble a younger cast for the new X-Men cooled expectations. When word spread that Sadie Sink might play Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the assumption was made that Erivo, 39, would no longer fit the studio’s age profile for the team.

But scooper MyTimeToShineHello has now challenged that assumption. “Cynthia Erivo is still being considered for the role of Storm in the X-MEN reboot,” they wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The claim keeps Erivo in contention despite the younger casting reports.

A younger core lineup, anyway, does not necessarily rule out an older cast member. Reports indicate the reboot’s focus will be the original comic book lineup: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel, and Iceman. One or more veteran characters could still be in a mentor capacity, a role Storm has filled in Marvel comics.

Furthermore, Erivo has made her interest public as she named Storm as a character she wants to manifest. “I really want to play Storm,” she said. “I know it sounds frivolous, but I think we haven’t uncovered how grand she is and all of that inner turmoil that she has, so I think there’s a world where we could do something like that” (via Comic Book Movie)

After scattered teases in WandaVision, Ms. Marvel, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the X-Men will feature in Avengers: Doomsday later this year. A standalone movie is now in development.
