Robert Downey Jr.’s Future as Doctor Doom & Tony Stark Gets Exciting Report

Marvel fans have continuously been speculating possibilities since the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. would trade the arc reactor for a metal mask. Now, a new rumor suggests the actor’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is far more extensive than just Doctor Doom. Instead of a one-off appearance, the latest chatter points to a long-term future involving Tony Stark as well.

Robert Downey Jr. rumored to stick around as Doctor Doom

According to scooper My Time to Shine Hello, “Robert Downey Jr. will keep playing Doctor Doom after Secret Wars and not only that but he will also return as Tony Stark.” While this remains unconfirmed, it fits neatly with Marvel’s multiverse approach, which allows characters to return in unexpected ways.

Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday is already one of the studio’s unexpected casting decisions. After spending over a decade as Iron Man, he is now stepping into the role of one of Marvel’s most powerful villains.

This rumored plan aligns with recent commentary from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige regarding the decision to cast the Academy Award winner. Feige detailed the origins of the recasting, sharing that the concept took shape approximately three-and-a-half years ago. “We never lost touch with Downey,” Feige stated. “He is ingrained in the fabric of the MCU for obvious reasons, and we would talk about when and how and if there could be a return.”

Marvel also leaned into the flexibility of its multiverse storytelling. “It’s our universe. It’s a multiverse. We can do whatever the heck we want. He played the most iconic hero. Let’s have him play the most iconic villain,” Feige added.

So, with the latest rumor and Fiege’s comment, Marvel fans might just be able to see Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and Tony Stark.
