How Peaky Blinders Movie Is Different From Show Explained by Director

In the wake of the theatrical release of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, director Tom Harper has come out to explain how the movie is different from its parent show. During a recent sit-down, Harper, who previously helmed three Season 1 episodes, listed all the aspects that set the feature-length Peaky Blinders outing apart from the six seasons of the fan-favorite historical crime drama.

Tom Harper says Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is inherently ‘more cinematic’ than the show

The Heart of Stone director recently noted that the Peaky Blinders movie primarily focuses on the story of Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) rather than exploring the arcs of the supporting characters, as done in the series.

“Just inherently, the way we thought about it was slightly different in terms of the writing,” Tom Harper remarked while speaking with GamesRadar+. “It’s a more singular story than the series. The series obviously jumps around from character to character, and you have multiple story lines going at any one time. This is much more focused on Tommy and this particular chapter of his life. So I think that just inherently it is more cinematic in its conception.”

“Having a bit more time and money to enhance the production values is slightly different,” Harper added. “Having the ability to be able to go to all the different places that we found, from Liverpool to Manchester to Birmingham to Stoke to Leeds to Bradford… Being able to do that, rather than do it in visual effects or build it in a studio, imbues everything with a different feel and a different tone. So it’s the combination of those multiple things that I think give it that cinematic filmic feel.”

Led by Cillian Murphy, the Peaky Blinders movie takes place around six years after the events of Season 6. Set in the backdrop of World War 2, the film follows Tommy’s journey to save his son, Duke (Barry Keoghan), who inadvertently gets embroiled in a Nazi scheme to inflict severe damage on the British economy. Additional cast members include Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, Stephen Graham, Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, and more.

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is currently running in theaters and has garnered rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The movie will also premiere on Netflix on March 20, 2026.
