Timothée Chalamet Blasted on The View Over Recent Remark: ‘Be Careful, Boy’

Timothée Chalamet has drawn criticism from the hosts of The View for his recent controversial comments about opera and ballet. They noted that despite coming from a family with a dance background, the actor made remarks that they found quite “shallow.”

The View hosts criticize Timothée Chalamet over his opera and ballet comment

On The View’s Monday episode, the panel of hosts brought up Timothée Chalamet and Matthew McConaughey’s conversation from the Variety and CNN Town Hall.

Sara Haines joked that Chalamet’s remarks could be due to a “family issue,” since his grandmother, mother, and sister are all ballet dancers. She then explained that opera and ballet are “huge” in other places. Haines added that she believes the Wonka star might not be familiar with the influence of those art forms.

For context, during the Variety interview, the Dune actor said he isn’t interested in being a part of ballet or opera. He seemed to insinuate that they are dying art forms, adding, “No one cares about this anymore. All respect to the ballet and opera people out there.” After realizing what he said, the 30-year-old said, “I just lost 14 cents in viewership.”

Back on The View, co-host Sunny Hostin expressed a harsher criticism. She said that, as a theater artist herself, she was “offended and disappointed” by the Marty Supreme actor’s comments. Hostin added that she hadn’t realized that he was that “vapid” and “shallow.”

On the other hand, guest host Sheryl Underwood defended Timothée Chalamet, speculating that he could’ve said it because he is “young.” She hoped that if he were to portray Rudolf Nureyev, a Soviet ballet dancer, in a film, he would probably “respect the art form a little bit better.”

Underwood also said that the young stars shouldn’t comment in haste because it could influence their followers. She then jokingly addressed Chalamet and offered to hear his thoughts personally.

Finally, Whoopi Goldberg expressed her disappointment. She said that it “doesn’t feel good” when an artist “craps on somebody else’s art form.” She addressed the actor and said, “When people get mad, it’ll be a lot more than 14 cents. So, be careful. I’m just saying, be careful, boy.” She concluded, “Don’t apologize when you’ve insulted. It doesn’t sound right.”
