If you are tired of receiving smushed Whoppers, Burger King has some good news for you. After spending a week listening to customers complain about smushed Whoppers, Burger King has decided to launch an elevated version instead of completely revamping it.
Burger King all set to update its Whopper amid complaints
On Thursday, February 26, Burger King announced the launch of its updated Whopper in a press release. The flame-grilled sandwich will now feature a better-tasting bun as well as a new creamier mayonnaise. A report from CNN revealed that the new burger will add $4,000 a year to the fast-food chain’s investment. However, the burger behemoth has advised local owners not to increase the price so that they do not alienate customers. It will be available across 7,000 restaurants nationwide.
During a chat with CNN, Tom Curtis, president of Burger King US and Canada, spoke about the changes to its signature item. He said, “So the Whopper being smushed, literally, I’ve heard it… and we’ve seen it. (We) improved packaging that kind of holds it together. The creamier mayonnaise frankly just came from some franchisees who said they wanted to see a more premium mayonnaise. And then also upgrading and premium-izing the bun.”
Amy Alarcon, Burger King’s head chef, revealed that they had to get approximately a dozen national bakeries to create a better bun. They altered the baking pan and added a glaze. Alarcon explained that this helped the sesame seeds stick to the bun better. This gave it a more “artisanal” and “less factory-produced high-speed-production-baked item.”
Besides the premium-quality bun and new mayonnaise, the burger will also include “freshly cut onions and tomatoes, crisp lettuce, and tangy pickles.” Further, instead of a paper wrap, it will now come in clamshell boxes. The team claimed that this box maintained the burger’s freshness “while still retaining some of the heat and getting that melty cheese experience.”
