One of the most interesting aspects of The Young and the Restless is Jack Abbott and Victor Newman‘s rivalry. In his recent interview, actor Peter Bergman, who played Jack, shared how the reel-life conflict became real.
Peter Bergman found it ‘tough’ to work with Eric Braeden in early Young and Restless days
In his interview at Soapy podcast, Peter Bergman opened up on Jack and Victor’s rivalry in The Young and the Restless and how it transcended fiction. The verteran actor stated, “There was tension there. There was a lot of tension there. In fairness to Eric, Jack Abbott wasn’t kind of naturally who I was. Today, he is.”
He further added, “At the time, Jack was a real cad. He was a womanizing, manipulating cad of a guy.” Bergman shared, “He was not very kind. And so for me, it required that I kind of steel myself in a way that I could bring some cocky to the set.” He further explained, “So I brought a lot of cocky to the set. And I’m sure Eric probably looked over and thought, ‘Who is this Mr. Cocky here?”
The 72-year-old also said, “Eric and I always worked very differently. So early on, there was some real conflict there, yes. It was very tough. And that made the transition [from AMC to Y&R] harder.” Bergman continued, “And I worked pretty exclusively with Eric and Melody for my first two years there, besides the Abbott family part of it. And it was… it was an experience.”
Further, Bergman admitted that he and Braeden are “great friends today.” The father of two added, “We get along very well today and are very proud of this [Jack/Victor saga].” He called the saga “probably the oldest enmity in all of television.” The award-winning actor concluded, “The journey we’ve taken together [off camera], I’m also very proud of.”
