Ex-NFL star Tony Romo admits to trolling fans with viral Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce remark
Ex-NFL star Tony Romo admits he inaccurately referred to Taylor Swift as Travis Kelce’s wife twice during the 2023 NFL season. Interestingly, this was the year Swift and Kelce first started dating. Not only that, the pop icon started making appearances to support the Chiefs’ tight end at his matches.
In a new interview with SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up on Thursday, January 29, Romo said he did it on purpose to “kind of play with the fans a little bit.” He casually admitted, “I was like, ‘And there’s, I think I said, ‘His wife.’ I did that on purpose and people [were] like, ‘Do you know something…?’ (via PEOPLE).”
The 45-year-old continued, “I was like, ‘Nah, I just wanted to make you guys think for a second.'” He reiterated it was an attempt to “just mess with you a little bit.”
The former Dallas Cowboys star confessed, “It was so difficult” to remain neutral and balanced as Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s romance grew and all eyes were on them.
On December 10, 2023, Romo jokingly addressed the singer as Kelce‘s wife during the Chiefs’ loss to the Buffalo Bills. Then, one week later, during Chiefs vs. Raiders, he said again, “As you see, Kelce’s wife, Taylor Swift, in the audience.” However, he quickly corrected himself and added, “Er, I’m sorry. Girlfriend!” Another commentator chimed in with, “Not yet,” as the duo laughed at their blunder.
Notably, Swift and Kelce announced their engagement on August 26 with heartwarming pictures and a heartfelt caption. The couple will reportedly marry sometime in June this year, although they haven’t spoken about it.
