The release date of Shrek 5 has been delayed twice so far. Owing to the holds, speculation about the reasons surfaced. Now, a new rumor from a notable scooper claims to reveal the reason behind the delay. The film was previously scheduled for 2026 but is now expected to hit the big screen next summer.
Shrek 5 rumor teases real reason it got delayed
A new rumor suggests that Shrek 5’s release date was delayed because the creatives decided to change the film’s story.
Notable scooper, MyTimetoShineHello wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “I hear the delay with Shrek 5 is as people suspected to change the plot of the film.”
Shrek 5 was originally announced for release on July 1, 2026. However, Universal Pictures later delayed the release date to December 23, 2026, in January 2025. One month later, the first teaser trailer was released. The footage shows Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Shrek’s daughter, Felicia, and Pinocchio reacting to Shrek’s different appearances in the magic mirror.
Later, in August 2025, the film company announced that the film would hit the big screens on June 30, 2027.
Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy will reprise their voice roles of Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey from previous films. The trio is joined by Spider-Man: No Way Home star Zendaya, who will voice Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia. Also part of the cast are Happy Gilmore 2 actor Marcello Hernández and Superman star Skyler Gisondo. The pair will voice Shrek and Fiona’s two sons, Fergus and Farkle, respectively.
Meanwhile, Conrad Vernon, who co-directed Shrek 2, will co-direct the film with franchise veteran Walt Dohrn. Dohrn previously served as story artist and writer on Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third. He also worked as Head of Story for the fourth film in addition to voicing Rumpelstiltskin.
The Shrek film franchise, which launched in 2001, has reportedly grossed an estimated $4 billion worldwide. This figure includes the total gross of the four main films, estimated at $2974.9 billion, and the two Puss-in-Boots spin-offs — 2011’s Puss in Boots and 2022’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish — which grossed an estimated $1.035.3 billion.
