Jason Statham joins Fortnite as an ally
Jason Statham joins forces with Fortnite as a playable ally to promote his new movie “Shelter”. As revealed by IGN, the official Shelter experience is live right now on Fortnite as the film nears its release on January 30. Players team up with Statham’s character, Michael Mason, to protect a young girl, Jessie (played by Bodhi Rae Breathnach). Mason is a former assassin. It takes place on a remote island while confronting the demons of his own past.
Fortnite has built a custom 1-4 player map and a new roguelike mode for Statham. Players join Mason in fighting off enemies and surviving a raging storm. The custom map also includes voiceover work by the 58-year-old actor himself.
Players can earn cash along the way. These can be used to spend on permanent upgrades that carry over into future runs. In line with other games like Hades, the system allows players a respawn option. Players are eligible for powerful upgrades called buffs, giving the mode infinite replayability.
Nic Hill, co-founder and chief innovation officer of Sawhorse Productions, which helped develop the “Shelter” collab, shared a statement to commemorate the mode’s release.
He said, “We wanted to create an experience that ignites and celebrates the Fortnite community in a way that honors the authenticity of the film. By working with native Fortnite creators and Jason himself, we can reach gamers and get people excited to see the movie, or replay their favorite parts in an immersive way.” (via Variety).
