New NBC Pilot Ordered With Dramatic Conspiracy Assassin Plot

NBC is launching a potential new series, greenlighting an intense assassin pilot less than two weeks into the new year. The project pairs veteran TV creator Josh Safran with Today co-host Jenna Bush Hager.

NBC has greenlit Protection, a new series written by Josh Safran and produced by Universal Television. The pilot is one of NBC’s first scripted orders of the year and reflects the network’s push to lock in premium drama concepts early in the traditional pilot window.

In Protection, a U.S. Marshal’s death in the line of duty triggers what initially appears to be a routine investigation. That case soon unravels into a far-reaching conspiracy when a mysterious assassin begins targeting the Thornhill family, a tight-knit group of law enforcement agents.

As the danger escalates, the Thornhills are forced to confront long-standing personal conflicts while crossing professional lines. Drawing on a lifetime of experience protecting civilians and political figures, the family must work together to stop the killer. Even if doing so means violating the sworn code that defines their careers.

The executive producers include Safran, Jenna Bush Hager, and her producing partner Ben Spector. The project is produced by Universal Television and falls under Bush Hager’s first-look deal with Universal Studio Group through her Thousand Voices production company.

Moreover, Protection joins a growing list of NBC pilot pickups, including a reboot of The Rockford Files, which also reportedly received a pilot order this month. NBC is reportedly expected to commission three to four drama pilots and a similar number of comedy pilots between January and May.

As per longstanding broadcast tradition, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming President of Scripted Content Lisa Katz spent the holiday break reviewing pilot scripts. The first two NBC new series came after the break ended, showing the network’s accelerated development pace this year (via Deadline).
