Despite being one of the most popular Hollywood couples of their time, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner rarely spoke publicly about their split a decade ago. The 53-year-old actress recently opened up about the divorce and its impact on her. She also revealed what the “hardest” part of the separation was.
Jennifer Garner discusses the impact of divorce with Ben Affleck
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck were together for a decade. They share three children, Samuel, Fin, and Violet. This meant that when their marriage fell apart, it was not just two people separating, but an entire family being affected.
Garner spoke about this difficult period in a new interview with Marie Claire UK. “You have to be smart about what you can and can’t handle, and I could not handle what was out there,” Garner recalled. “But what was out there was not what was hard. The fact of it is what was hard. The actual breaking up of a family was what was hard. Losing a true partnership and friendship is what was hard.”
Amid everything that was happening, the “hardest thing” for Garner became navigating the intense attention surrounding her split with Affleck. “Not hard in the grand scheme of what is hard in the world, but tricky for me and tricky for my family,” she explained in the interview.
To cope, she began avoiding tabloids as much as possible and distancing herself from the topic publicly. “I make a big, concerted effort to see my people as much as I can, because that’s what matters,” she added. “That’s where your resilience is. It’s in your relationships and in the people who carry you through.”
In the interview, Garner also praised her children for navigating the difficult period with grace.
As of now, things remain cordial between Garner and Affleck. The Argo star has spoken positively about his ex-wife in the past. The former couple spent Thanksgiving together this year and continues to co-parent their children.
