Sam Heughan, who plays James “Jamie” Fraser in Starz’s romantic historical fantasy drama series Outlander, has revealed some surprising details about the ending of the popular series. Outlander premiered on August 9, 2014, and quickly became a massive hit. In January 2023, the show was renewed for the eighth and final season.
What Sam Heughan said about Outlander’s ending
Heughan disclosed in a recent interview with People that the cast of Outlander doesn’t know how the series will conclude. “We don’t really know how it ends,” he said. “We kind of know, but we shall see in the edit ourselves.”
However, Heughan did hint at what is in store for the Outlander fans in the final chapter of the hit series with three descriptive words: “Reconciliation… war, and eternity.”
Notably, Outlander is an adaptation of the book series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon. Ronald D. Moore developed the show. The series’ cast also includes Caitríona Balfe as Claire Fraser, Richard Rankin as Roger MacKenzie, Sophie Skelton as Brianna “Bree” Fraser MacKenzie, and Charles Vandervaart as William Ransom.
Outlander tells the story of Claire Beauchamp (Balfe), a World War II nurse, who travels back in time to the 18th century and encounters Highland warrior Jamie Fraser. As the story progresses, they fall in love, get married, and have children.
In the above-mentioned interview, Heughan expressed hope that fans would look back on the show “and see it being an amazing adventure that they’ve gone on with us,” adding that they could then “go back to Season 1 and start watching from the beginning again.”
Heughan also said that he hoped that viewers would feel the cast and crew of the series had done “justice to the characters and to the story, and to the fans.” He continued, “You know, it’s hard. How do you finish a show like that? Obviously, we didn’t finish the books. We had to finish our show, so it is a departure from the books in some ways, but for us, it was rewarding, and we wanted to finish it right.”
Outlander Season 8 premieres on Starz on March 6, 2026.
