‘6-7’ is the most banished word of the year

Considering the rollercoaster of a year 2025 was, people are hoping many things won’t make a comeback. As for popular slang that people think are better left in the past, “6-7” tops the list.

The viral meme ranks highest among the most banished words of 2026. The phrase, derived from rapper Skrilla’s viral song, Doot Doot (67), is deemed overused and annoying by many.

According to Lake Superior State University’s 50th annual “Banished Words” list, “6-7” has bagged the top post. Meanwhile, the words “Cooked” and “Gifted” have also made it to the top ten. “No one seems to know what it’s about, what it means. It’s just a cultural phenomenon, kind of like last year we banished the word ‘skibidi’”, LSSU President David Travis said.

“The volume of submissions for this one could have taken up the whole list,” Travis jokingly revealed. “At least slots ‘6-7’ would have sufficed”, he added.  “Parents and guardians led the charge on this one, with some feeling this isn’t enough”, LSSU explained about “Cooked” making it to the list.

“Another case of a noun being used as a verb”, they said about the inclusion of “Gifted”. Interestingly, the word also got a nomination way back in 1994.

On the other hand, “6-7” has also been named word of the year 2025 by Dictionary.com. “Most other two-digit numbers had no meaningful trend over that period, implying that there is something special about 67. 67 shows the speed at which a new word can rocket around the world as a rising generation enters the global conversation,” they explained.
