Jennifer Lawrence Reveals First Acting Job

Jennifer Lawrence didn’t start her acting career in film or television. Instead, she entered the industry through a reality TV advertisement. While speaking with Leonardo DiCaprio on Variety’s Actors on Actors, the 35-year-old actress revealed that one of her earliest jobs was a promotional commercial for MTV’s hit reality series “My Super Sweet 16” in the early 2000s.

Jennifer Lawrence played a ‘fictional rich girl’ for her first acting gig

Lawrence recalled playing a spoiled, ultra-wealthy teenager in the promo. “I did an MTV promo for My Super Sweet 16,” she recalled. “I’m being carried on a chaise lounge, and then they drop me.” When DiCaprio asked whether she appeared on the actual series, Lawrence quickly clarified that she did not. She explained that the role existed only for promotional purposes and that she portrayed a “fictional rich girl” throwing an extravagant birthday party.

Lawrence said she began acting at 14 after moving to New York when she landed a lead role on “The Bill Engvall Show.” She went on to break through in 2010 with “Winter’s Bone”, a performance that earned critical acclaim and introduced her to a wider audience. Although Lawrence later achieved global fame through “The Hunger Games,“ she credited director David O. Russell with shaping her acting skills.

Lawrence acknowledged that Russell has a reputation for being tough but said she experienced him as a stern coach rather than an intimidating figure. She recalled, “He can be really, really hard on people. For me, I don’t know if it was because I grew up doing sports, and so I felt like he was just a stern coach.”

Lawrence also opened up about an acting habit she described as both helpful and problematic. She said she fully disconnects from her work at the end of each day and avoids thinking ahead to the next scene. That approach often leads to frantic preparation the following morning. “It’s great for my life. It makes me not go crazy, but the next morning is hell,” she added.
