Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore is expected to appear in court for arraignment on Friday after spending two nights in jail. The 39-year-old was fired from his post on Wednesday for what the school referred to as “an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.” Details about his arrest remain scarce.
Sherrone Moore might face arraignment amid assault allegations
Sherrone Moore, a former offensive guard at the University of Oklahoma and recently fired head football coach for the University of Michigan, spent two nights at the Washtenaw County Jail and remains under investigation as of now.
Now, the 39-year-old coach is expected to be arraigned on Friday amidst allegations of an assault. While the school credited his dismissal to an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” he remains under police investigation.
Pittsfield Township police issued a statement saying officers were dispatched to investigate an alleged assault and took the person into custody. They did not mention a name. However, the statement was released in response to media inquiries on Moore (via The Independent).
Michigan has not disclosed details of the alleged “relationship” but claimed to have found credible evidence. Moore is married with three young daughters. Athletic director Warde Manuel reportedly said that Moore’s actions were in clear violation of university policy.
Moore was named Michigan’s twenty-first head football coach following Jim Harbaugh’s departure to the Los Angeles Chargers. He signed a five-year contract with a base annual salary of five point five million dollars. Reports state that the university will not have to buy out the remaining years of his contract because he was fired for cause.
Biff Poggi will reportedly serve as the interim coach for the time being. The university will also continue to look for a new head coach. Poggi previously filled the position when Moore was suspended earlier this season in relation to a Harbaugh-era sign-stealing scandal.
