Glenn Close has spent more than five decades proving she’s one of Hollywood’s heavy hitters. However, even she can still drop a behind-the-scenes story that makes fans lean in. The Oscar nominee recently spilled a throwback story about the late Robert Redford. While looking back on her long roster of co-stars, Close revealed which actor delivered the most unforgettable on-camera kiss of her career.
Glenn Close says her best on-screen kiss was with Robert Redford
Glenn Close told Julia Louis-Dreyfus on the Wiser Than Me podcast that her connection with Robert Redford went beyond their work on the 1984 baseball drama The Natural. After filming, Redford invited her to what she called “a very romantic restaurant,” but at the time, she didn’t realize the significance of the gesture.
She laughed as she admitted she was too clueless and unsure to even consider that it might have been a date, looking back on the missed opportunity. “And I was too clueless and unknowing and unsure to even consider that I might have dated him… I didn’t get it.”
Even though nothing romantic blossomed off-screen, Close shared earlier this year that her on-screen kiss with Robert Redford in The Natural remains the most unforgettable of her career. She joked that she “only got to kiss him once,” though she admitted they might have done two takes.
In The Natural, Robert Redford starred as Roy Hobbs, a late-blooming baseball player whose skill brings new life to his team. Close played Iris Gaines, his steadying presence and love interest. Their on-screen chemistry became one of the film’s most memorable elements and helped earn Close her third Oscar nomination.
Beyond the cameras, the project also sparked a lasting friendship between the two, one that endured long after filming wrapped. Robert Redford died in September at the age of 89, and Close later told CNN that they had stayed close over the years. She remembered him not just as a co-star, but as a visionary who poured his time, money, and energy into what he believed in.
