Gwyneth Paltrow recently opened up about her 7-year-long break from acting and how it gave her the chance to spend time with her family. The Marvel star revealed the deeply personal reasons that motivated her to take this much-needed hiatus.
Gwyneth Paltrow says she ‘needed to grow up’ on taking a break from Hollywood
During a candid conversation with Jacob Elordi on Variety’s latest Actors on Actors episode, the Oscar-winning actress spoke about her long hiatus.
“When I was doing it in my 20s, I never took a break,” the Shakespeare in Love star recalled. “I kind of burned myself out a little bit. So when I had my daughter, I was like, I’m just gonna take a minute. Luckily, I could afford to take a break.”
“Then I had my son, and then I was like, I think I wanna approach this in a different way and have a little bit more of a life,” the Se7en actress continued. “I think I felt, you know, a lot of loneliness when I was doing it in my 20s. I didn’t know myself really well yet, and I was travelling all the time. So I just kind of wanted to take a break.”
The Two Lovers actress explained that taking on supporting roles like those in Iron Man movies gave her the break she needed to spend time with her family.
“I felt like there was a part of myself that I needed to grow up and understand who I was,” Paltrow shared. “I got a lot of those answers through my family. And then I started a business, and it became really hard to contemplate doing something. I didn’t want to go on location while my kids were still home.”
However, when her son and stepson went off to college, the actress felt “shock and disbelief” and asked herself questions like “Who am I?” That’s when director Josh Safdie approached her for Marty Supreme, reminding her of the kind of collaborators she worked with in the ’90s. “I was like, I think this is gonna be really worthwhile,” she said.
Paltrow’s last major role was as Pepper Potts in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. After nearly seven years, she is making a return to film with Marty Supreme. She’ll be starring alongside Timothée Chalamet, who is playing a tennis player named Marty Mauser, loosely based on Marty Reisman. The movie will debut in theaters on December 25, 2025.
