Sydney Sweeney‘s The Housemaid is becoming a bigger franchise, and fans will soon have another way to experience the story. The erotic psychological thriller is getting a stage adaptation based on Freida McFadden‘s bestselling novel, bringing the story to UK theaters in 2027.
The announcement follows the 2025 movie’s major box-office success. It earned more than $400 million worldwide. While The Housemaid helped introduce the story to a wider audience, the new production will take it in a different direction. It will bring the original novel to the stage rather than continue the movie’s storyline.
The timing of the stage adaptation is also notable because the sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, is already in production and set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
From $400 million box office hit to a growing thriller franchise
Bekah Brunstetter will write the new stage adaptation. Brunstetter received a Tony Award nomination for her work on the Broadway musical The Notebook. Her other credits include the television series The Five-Star Weekend, This Is Us and Maid. Her play The Cake has also been produced more than 100 times worldwide.
Matthew Dunster will direct the production. His previous theater work includes 2:22 A Ghost Story, which ran for 694 performances in London’s West End, and The Hunger Games: On Stage.
Dunster has received four Olivier Award nominations, while his Broadway production of Hangmen earned five Tony Award nominations. Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska are developing the production for Melting Pot in association with Lionsgate.
The first announced tour dates begin at Richmond Theatre on September 14, 2027, and run through September 18. The tour will then visit Birmingham, Malvern, Brighton, Cheltenham, and several other UK cities.
The original novel follows a woman who takes a job as a housemaid for a wealthy family, only to discover that the household hides disturbing secrets. McFadden expanded the story through The Housemaid’s Secret and The Housemaid Is Watching.
The stage production is not a new Sydney Sweeney-led spin-off. The next major film release is The Housemaid’s Secret, scheduled for December 17, 2027.
