The Coen Brothers’ Josh O’Connor Movie Gets Theatrical Release Date Window From Netflix

Netflix has acquired the global rights to Joel Coen’s next movie, which marks an exciting reunion with Ethan Coen ahead of its streaming debut. The film, titled Jack of Spades, will be released theatrically in fall 2027 before arriving on the streamer. Set in 1800s Scotland, the film will be a gothic mystery led by Josh O’Connor.

Deadline has reported on Netflix’s acquisition of the film’s worldwide distribution rights. The deal marks the second time the Coen brothers have had their films released on the service. It follows 2018’s critically acclaimed The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

The new movie marks a major reunion for Joel and Ethan Coen

Jack of Spades will be Joel and Ethan Coen’s first major reunion since The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Joel Coen is directing the film from a screenplay co-written by him and Ethan Coen, Eleanor Catton, and Conor McPherson. The upcoming film reportedly received positive scores during test screenings, followed by it landing a global distributor.

The film also reunites Joel Coen with Inside Llewyn Davis cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel and composer Carter Burwell. The film is being produced by Joel Coen, Robert Graf, Frances McDormand, Steven Rales, Graham Broadbent, and Pete Czernin. Donald MacKinnon will serve as the executive producer on the feature.

The upcoming feature also marks Joel Coen’s second independent directorial venture. It was preceded by 2021’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, which received a limited theatrical release before premiering on Apple TV. Delbonnel also served as the cinematographer on the film, earning an Oscar nod for Best Cinematography.

Jack of Spades will star Patsy Ferran, Josh O’Connor, Damian Lewis, and Lesley Manville. The film is based on Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel The Alien: A Story of Middle Age. A previous report had claimed that Patsy Ferran would play the lead, while O’Connor will play a man who has returned from the dead. The film currently doesn’t have a final release date.
