Matt Reeves’ Sci-Fi Franchise Arrives on HBO Max Today Before The Batman Part II

A popular sci-fi franchise is returning to streaming. All four modern Planet of the Apes movies arrive on HBO Max on November 2, bringing the reboot saga together in one place.

The collection includes two films directed by Matt Reeves, who also helmed The Batman. Reeves joined the franchise with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and returned for War for the Planet of the Apes. Rupert Wyatt and Wes Ball directed the other two entries.

The streaming release also comes ahead of Reeves’ upcoming The Batman Part II. He is currently returning to Gotham for the next chapter of his DC story. Meanwhile, viewers can revisit his sci-fi franchise through these four releases.

What to know about the four Planet of the Apes movies on HBO Max

The collection follows humans and intelligent apes as their world changes over several decades. Each movie moves the story forward while introducing new characters, conflicts, and challenges.

Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes introduces Caesar, played by Andy Serkis. The chimpanzee develops advanced intelligence after scientist Will Rodman (James Franco) administers an experimental treatment. John Lithgow and Freida Pinto also star in the film, which shows how Caesar’s life changes after humans take him away from the family that raised him.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes takes place 10 years after the first film. Directed by Matt Reeves, it follows Caesar as he tries to maintain peace between his ape community and human survivors. Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, and Gary Oldman lead the human cast, while Toby Kebbell plays Koba, an ape whose actions threaten the fragile relationship.

War for the Planet of the Apes brings Reeves back as director. Caesar and his followers face a military force led by a ruthless Colonel, played by Woody Harrelson. Steve Zahn also joins the cast as Bad Ape, while Amiah Miller plays Nova, a young human girl.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Wes Ball, takes place several generations after Caesar’s reign. Owen Teague plays Noa, a young chimpanzee who questions his world after encountering Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), a powerful ape leader. Freya Allan also stars as Mae, a human whose journey with Noa becomes important to the future of both species.

All four films are part of HBO Max’s November 2 streaming lineup.
