Filmmaker Lars von Trier shared a troubling health update during a rare public appearance. The Danish director opened up about his struggles with Parkinson’s disease and anxiety, offering a glimpse into his life since revealing his diagnosis in 2022. He also reflected on his career as questions remain about his planned final film, After.
Von Trier discussed his condition in a 23-minute conversation with his daughter, filmmaker Agnes Trier, filmed for the Descendant art exhibition. During the discussion, he spoke candidly about his physical and emotional struggles, his cinematic legacy, and his outlook on life. His remarks also raised questions about whether he can complete his final feature film.

When Agnes asked her father about his health, Lars von Trier responded candidly, “I have a disease I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.” He also described feeling awful and struggling with anxiety. The director admitted that he finds it difficult to feel excited about things anymore.
Von Trier also questioned the lasting importance of his work as he discussed his legacy. He said, “I find it hard to get excited,” before acknowledging his attachment to some of his films. He added, “Of course, I’d like those to be part of my legacy,” but questioned their significance in the wider context of life and mortality.
The conversation also included lighter moments. He recalled a decades-old disagreement with the late painter Per Kirkeby, whom he jokingly called an “a–hole” while discussing a critical letter. He also shared a story about his childhood pet tortoise.
The filmmaker also discussed his experience as an outsider. He suggested that his outsider status helped him succeed. He added that he had never made films for money but instead followed his own creative vision.
Meanwhile, After remains a major question mark. Von Trier reportedly completed the screenplay in August 2026, but he has not yet begun filming. Producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen previously said von Trier’s condition had affected him physically, but his mind remained fine. The team has not announced a production schedule or release date.
