Chris Rock‘s fourth scripted directorial outing has hit theaters today. Misty Green features some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. This includes Rosalind Eleazar, Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya, Anna Kendrick, Rock himself, and Topher Grace.
A24 produced the movie. Misty Green first debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in September earlier this year. The last feature that Chris Rock helmed as a director was Top Five, which came out 12 years ago. Misty Green has received praise for being a more thoughtful film than its predecessor, earning Rock praise. Rosalind Eleazer has also been praised for what has been called a star-making role.
How Misty Green came together under Chris Rock’s direction
Chris Rock spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about what inspired him to pen the script for Misty Green. He said that the idea came to him when he saw a former A-list actress perform in a loop group. Loop groups include voice actors providing background chatter and sound effects for TV and movies.
Regarding the experience that inspired the movie, Rock said, “In the loop group was a formerly famous actress. I was like, Wow, what is she doing here? Because you don’t really get paid for loop groups.” Rock said he would never reveal the actress’s name, but the experience sparked the initial idea that would blossom into Misty Green.
The movie follows Misty Green, an actress whose last successful project was a TV show that she worked in a few years ago. Now, on the verge of being evicted from her home, with a dependent brother who needs all the psychological and financial help he can get, Green is desperate for personal renaissance in a ruthless industry.
Eleazar plays the lead role. Alongside Driver, Kaluuya, Grace, and Kendrick, the movie also stars Anthony Anderson, Kelli Garner, Amy Landecker, Tracie Thoms, and Rich Sommer.
