‘Heavy on Meaningful Vibes’: Peaky Blinders Creator’s Oasis Movie Earns Strong Venice Reviews

The acclaimed documentary Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger premiered out of competition at the Venice Film Festival, earning widespread critical acclaim for its poignant look at the iconic British rock band.

Written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, the 123-minute documentary captures the band’s historic 2025 reunion tour. Rather than focusing solely on backstage drama, the film has resonated with critics for its emotional depth. Writing for TheWrap, critic Siddhant Adlakha described the project as “light on story but heavy on meaningful vibes.”

The movie currently has a 93% Tomatometer score based on 15 reviews at the time of writing this article. Critics have also praised the movie’s emotional depth, especially its portrayal of music’s impact on people.

As reviewer Matt Zoller Seitz put it, “The Oasis reunion tour is a way of drawing us into the movie’s true subjects: what music means to people and the practical value and personal importance of art in everyday life.”

Why critics say the film’s emotional impact matters more than its missing answers

Oasis was a huge hit in the 1990s; however, Noel and Liam Gallagher were known to have verbal and physical fights. As a result, the band split in 2009, and the brothers were no longer seen together on press tours. However, after ending their 15-year feud, the Gallaghers announced a comeback on August 27, 2024.

Although the documentary written by Knight does not delve into the details of the feud, it leaves an emotional impact that matters more to its audience. For instance, Hayley Croke wrote, “Liam and Noel Gallagher put their differences aside in a compelling study of forgiveness, putting their fans in the front row.”

The Australian’s Andrew McMillen added, “This is a film about emotion, and in particular the expression of male emotion, and how stoic men can be unlocked through art.”

The Oasis documentary is directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace. The official synopsis of the documentary reads, “Experience the meteoric rise of Oasis through rare footage and untold stories as the band reunites for Oasis Live ’25, chronicling their journey from Manchester streets to global rock stardom.”

Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger arrives in U.S. theaters and IMAX on September 11, 2026, before streaming internationally on Disney+ and on Hulu later this year.
