Tom Cruise’s latest Instagram post with Anne Hathaway has officially shut down Days of Thunder 2 AI rumors. Cruise recently shared a photo featuring himself and The Odyssey star to announce the sequel to his 1990 racing blockbuster, prompting some fans to question whether the image was AI-generated.
However, the Mission: Impossible actor followed up by sharing a video of the two stars together on location. In the clip, Hathaway and Cruise playfully adjust a close-up camera shot before stepping back to reveal a NASCAR race car painted with “Summer 2028” on the side.
Cruise opens the video by asking, “Now what?” to which Hathaway, who is currently pregnant, jokes, “I’m gonna have this baby, and then we’re gonna make the movie.” The fun video interaction quickly quashed the AI rumors surrounding their initial photo post.
Tom Cruise is returning to one of his most iconic racing roles
The sequel to Cruise’s 1990 classic will see the superstar reprise his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle. The social media reveal also served as the official casting announcement for Hathaway, who joins the franchise as a team owner and engineer.
Paramount Pictures previously announced that Jonathan Levine will direct Days of Thunder 2, working from a screenplay written by Will Staples. Cruise will also produce the project alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper.
The original film was directed by the late Tony Scott and told the story of a brash rookie stock car driver breaking into NASCAR. The original movie famously co-starred Nicole Kidman as neurosurgeon Dr. Claire Lewicki. However, the Eyes Wide Shut actress is not expected to reprise her role in the upcoming follow-up.
Besides starring in Days of Thunder, Cruise co-developed the story alongside screenwriter Robert Towne. Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer served as producers. Days of Thunder 2 is scheduled to hit theaters in June 2028.
