Andrew Garfield’s upcoming historical war movie is facing a bizarre marketing conflict after its UK distributor publicly denied any connection to Robin Hood. The film, which also stars Jamie Bell and Stephen Dillane, has found itself at the center of conflicting studio messaging across international markets.
The confusion around The Uprising began after its US distributor, Focus Features, shared a promotional clip featuring Garfield alongside a surprising new tagline on X: “Witness the rise of Robin Hood in THE UPRISING.” Up until that point, the film had been understood strictly as a historical period drama centered on the English Peasants’ Revolt of 1381.
Following the US post, the film’s UK distributor, Entertainment Film Distributors, issued an official statement to clarify the project’s identity, as reported by GamesRadar+, “The Uprising is a historical epic about the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, not Robin Hood. The UK marketing campaign does not make any reference to Robin Hood.”
The statement further highlighted that promotional assets “issued by other countries that may appear in the UK online and on social media referencing Robin Hood are not issued or approved by us.”
Who directs The Uprising and who else stars in it besides Andrew Garfield?
The Uprising is written and directed by Paul Greengrass, best known for helming the Jason Bourne franchise, Captain Phillips, United 93, and The Lost Bus.
According to the film’s synopsis, “Andrew Garfield stars as the leader of a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II. Set against the true events of the Uprising that helped inspire the legend of Robin Hood, he forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice.”
Besides The Magic Faraway Tree star, The Uprising’s ensemble cast features Tom Hollander (The Night Manager), Cosmo Jarvis (Shōgun), Thomasin McKenzie (Last Night in Soho), Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting), Woody Norman (The Electric State), and Katherine Waterston (Steve Jobs).
The film is produced by Jason Blum, Paul Greengrass, Gregory Goodman, Joanna Kaye, Joe Neurauter, and Lars Sylvest.
The Uprising is scheduled to hit theaters worldwide on September 10, 2026.
