Pirates of the Caribbean 6 could finally bring back Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, but his return may not be what fans expect. The upcoming sequel is currently under development.
In an interview with Deadline, producer Jerry Bruckheimer talked about Depp at the D23 event and said, “We’re talking with Johnny [Depp], we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.”
According to reports, unlike the other parts, the next chapter of Pirates of the Caribbean will focus on Margot Robbie’s character, while Jack Sparrow may only have a supporting role. This move is considered an evolution of the franchise.
What do we know about Pirates of the Caribbean 6 so far?
Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has been in development since 2018, with Disney exploring different ideas for how to continue the franchise. In September 2025, Bruckheimer confirmed at TheWrap’s TheGrill 2025 conference that Margot Robbie was still involved in the next installment. He also revealed that the producers worked on two scripts at the same time.
Depp first starred as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003, alongside Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, and Keira Knightley. He further reprised his role in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007), making him a major character in the franchise.
However, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) focused on him as the main lead while introducing other major characters.
Following a series of legal troubles, Depp had to exit many major projects in Hollywood. However, after the trials, he made a comeback in the industry, and the talks of his return as Jack Sparrow started again. If Depp reprised his role as a supporting character, Jack Sparrow could be used as the bridge between previous films and the new era of the franchise. Fans have to wait, as Disney has yet to announce any details related to the film.
