Jeremy Renner and Jon Hamm’s Tag brings action-comedy fun to HBO Max
HBO Max has added Renner and Hamm’s Tag this weekend. The film was directed by Jeff Tomsic and written by Rob McKittrick and Mark Steilen.
The real story began in the early 1980s when 10 friends at Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane, Washington. Started playing tag during high school, the game ended after graduation, with Joe Tombari remaining “It” after being tagged last.
Eight years later, the friends reunited and joked that Joe was still “It.” (It represents the person who needs to chase and tag another person). They decided to restart the game in 1990, creating official rules and playing every February. They even travel across the country, surprise each other, and involve family members to keep the game going.
The 2018 movie also shows a group of lifelong friends who keep a childhood game of tag going for years, refusing to give it up. However, it reduces the group to five friends and adds larger action scenes. They meet to continue the game every February, travelling across the country and setting up clever plans. All of them try to tag one another before the month ends. The director kept the real story of lifelong friendship at its center.

Alongside Renner and Jon Hamm in the lead, the movie also features Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, Hannibal Buress, Isla Fisher, Rashida Jones, and Leslie Bibb. It keeps the heart of the real story and celebrates friendship, while the movie changes some details for dramatic effect.
Tag received mixed reactions from critics and audiences after its release. It holds a 55% critics’ score and a 57% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also had a modest run at the worldwide box office.
The movie focuses on old friends, funny moments, and a simple game that never ended. With its energetic cast, playful action, and true-story angle, it makes an easy and enjoyable weekend watch on HBO.
