A beloved Jim Carrey movie is getting a sequel. The news comes after many rumors and reports suggesting that a new film in the franchise might be in the works, but now it seems confirmed to actually be happening.
Carrey starred in a number of beloved comedy movies throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber, The Cable Guy, and many more. In recent years, he’s mostly been seen playing a live-action Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. The fourth entry in that franchise is set to be released next year.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Carrey is officially in talks for a sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas for Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment. Ron Howard, who helmed the first movie, is returning to direct the movie, while he’s also serving as a producer alongside Brian Grazer. Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel are writing the script.
Released in 2000, Carrey plays the titular character in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which is based on the 1957 children’s book of the same name by Dr. Seuss. The movie won Best Makeup at the 73rd Academy Awards, while it was also nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction. It was the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2000, raking in approximately $346.5 million globally at the time.
Plot details for How the Grinch Stole Christmas 2 remain under wraps at this time. It’s worth pointing out that there was a sequel to the Dr. Seuss book, titled How the Grinch Lost Christmas!, published in 2023, but whether or not the new movie adapts that source material remains to be seen. Susan Brandt is overseeing the project for Dr. Seuss Enterprises, while Britt Hennemuth and Christina Hoffrogge are overseeing for Universal.
