Taika Waititi’s next sci-fi film featuring a breakout Wednesday star just got a massive update. The film will be Waititi’s first feature since 2023’s Next Goal Wins.
What is the update on Taika Waititi’s new movie?
A new look at Waititi’s new movie, titled Klara and the Sun, has been revealed (via Vanity Fair). The film stars Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams, with the former playing a robot bought by a family in a dystopian future. Best known for making comedies, Waititi described Klara and the Sun as his “most dramatic” film. The film is an adaptation of the eponymous 2021 novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, which was longlisted for the 2021 Booker Prize.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Waititi said, “This one probably may even be my most dramatic film. At first, when I was writing, I was like, ‘Make this a Taika film and full of dumb f—ing robot humor.’ And that didn’t really work when I was writing it. It took away from the book, and I’m like, ‘Why am I adapting this really amazing book and then trying to break away from it?'”
The first look at the film was revealed at CinemaCon earlier this year, showing Ortega as a solar-powered robot, Klara, designed to provide companionship and support to humans. Klara is bought by the sickly Josie, played by Mia Tharia, while her mother, played by Adams, is skeptical of the robot’s ability to provide comfort.

In contrast to Wednesday Addams, Klara has an uplifting worldview, with Ortega adding, “I don’t think it was intentional at the moment,” she says, “but in hindsight, maybe I did want a break from the angsty teen/young adult category I felt a bit stuck in sometimes.”
The film is directed by Waititi, based on a screenplay co-written with Dahvi Waller. It’s produced by Waititi, David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford, Rosie Alison, and Garrett Basch.
Klara and the Sun will be released in theaters on October 23, 2026.
