Corning’s ‘A Day Made of Glass’ Finally Became a Reality

You may remember Corning’s ‘A Day Made of Glass’ video. Amassing over 25 million views on YouTube, the 5-minute clip’s recreation of a world in which every surface had a smart function seemed to terrify and excite the Internet in equal measure.

After slipping off the radar for a short while, Corning returned to show off their vision at CES 2016, offering attendees at the event a glimpse at ‘A Day Made of Glass’ in reality, with a booth highlighting various feasible implementations of their smart surface technology. 

The advanced glass technology essentially transforms a variety of surfaces into functional touchscreens, complete with various potential applications from being able to show traffic warnings on billboards along a highway, to allowing the user to watch TV shows on their kitchen world surface as they cook, to displaying a smart dashboard in their car. Corning’s CES booth showed off its automotive implementation in a demo, which highlighted features such as its ability to display accurate gas readings and the vehicle’s current speed, control features such as air conditioning and the user’s music playlists, and even alter the coloration of its sunroof.

The Glass also improves your in-car experience by way of Corning’s specialty glass windshield, which reduces auto weight and is capable of displaying a highly advanced HUD.

Corning also showed off the Gorilla Glass infotainment wall, which allowed users to navigate a variety of apps on a giant screen. In terms of Gorilla Glass’ various uses this is the most straightforward, allowing for the management of various home appliances and utilities. It also allows users to access Bluetooth audio and online video, as well as providing a calendar and family activity management tools. 

Glass can also be used in your kitchen, allowing users to see what’s in their fridge and keep track of what food items they’re running low on, alongside custom backgrounds, widgets and photos in order to create an interactive experience for the whole family.

Outside of its home use, the Gorilla Glass also provides unique opportunities for retailers, allowing consumers to experience the interactivity of online shopping in a real-world setting. This means that users can mix and match clothing items, choosing an outfit to go with that pair of shoes they’ve got their eye on without having to search around the store.

The Corning Gorilla Glass points to a future that looks extraordinary, yet also entirely feasible. Though we may be a long way off from seeing this technology being fully implemented in our homes, our cars and our stores, Corning have impressively covered pretty much every market that would be interested in the Glass. We’re excited to see how this tech progresses over the duration of the next few years
