Ta-Nehisi Coates & Brian Stelfreeze Relaunch Black Panther Comic For Marvel

Ahead of Black Panther’s live-action debut in next year’s Captain America: Civil War, Marvel is once again giving one of its iconic superheroes his own ongoing series.

According to The New York Times, The Atlantic writer and nonfiction author Ta-Nehisi Coates has been signed to write Black Panther for Marvel Comics. The artist for the book will be comic book veteran Brian Stelfreeze. The new Black Panther series will begin with a yearlong storyline called “A Nation Under Our Feet,” which finds T’Challa a.k.a. Black Panther facing a superhuman terrorist group calling themselves The People. And The People have ignited a violent uprising in Black Panther’s homeland, Wakanda.

“It’s going to be a story that repositions the Black Panther in the minds of readers,” explained Marvel Editor-in-chief Axel Alonso. “It really moves him forward.” Alonso also added that Black Panther “has the baddest costume in comics and is a dude who is smarter and better than everyone.”

Part of the renewed focus on Black Panther is coming because Chadwick Boseman will star as T’Challa in the Black Panther movie for Marvel Studios in 2018.

Marvel’s new Black Panther comic book series will launch in Spring 2016.
