Shorn Identity | Erick Orellana On Hair Coloring For Men

Celebrity hair colorist Erick Orellana has worked on tons of celebs (Anne Hathaway, Diane Keaton, Audrina Patridge, etc.), but when it comes to men’s color he thinks it’s crucial to see an expert.  Here, we ask him some questions on his top products, the biggest mistakes men make when it comes to color and, of course, who he thinks has the BEST color in Hollywood.

I first got my start as an assistant at the John Frieda Salon. I originally wanted to cut and style but the only opening was assisting a colorist, I took the position in hopes of getting my foot in the door. To my surprise, coloring came to me more naturally than cutting and styling.

What are your top products for coloring men’s hair?

I love using L’Oreal Demi-Permanent Hair Color since it creates a stain versus completely changing the hair.  This is especially good when it comes to grey hair.

What’s the biggest mistake that men make when coloring their hair?

Going too dark. Most men do know how to choose the right color for themselves; they usually opt for a very dark un-natural shade which leaves their hair looking like shoe polish and very fake-looking.

In your opinion, who are three male celebrities with the best hair color (not natural)?

Jared Leto created a trend with a very sunkissed look for men. Ryan Gosling also has very subtle highlights, which creates a very natural-looking effect. Finally, Henry Cavill looks pretty dapper with his not-so-obvious-looking darker hair for his roll as Superman

What do you think will be the next big color trend for men for fall/winter?

For men, hair trends, when it comes to color, always tend to stay pretty much consistent. Younger guys like to really play with color, and there seems to be a little bit of a punk rock vibe sweeping through young men (which it’s not the first time we have seen it), but can be appreciated if executed correctly.
